Project 365.: Allegra Maria Flores 7/1/95

What to say about Marissa.. She is my best friend. I have only known her for about a year, but I feel like I've known her forever. I still don't know very much about her actual life, but I intend to find out. I was in a dance with her in seventh grade so that's when I met her. Then we went to a friend's slumber party and the two of us and one other girl stayed up all night. Then we had a couple classes together in eighth grade and now she is my best friend. I am so glad I met her!! She is amazing!! We have had so many good times!! She is always fun to be around!! She is easy to talk to, always there for me, and absolutely hilarious!!! We both went to a friend's party the other day and she was like, "So what.. are you guys like best friend's now??" And we were both like, "Heck yes!!" She had no idea that we were even really friends because like I said, I just really met her this year. Okay, so now just a few random things about Marissa..

4-I made some drawing from those photos 5-once gathered some material I took an A1 piece of brown paper and started to think of the composition.6- I decided that it would be a poster that would include the 6 images.7- I browsed some books on fortune telling and cut out images.8-made a collage of my monoprints, drawings and images from the book trying to focus on the main scenes of '1984'.

This book got a lot of publicity when it was first issued in 2000. Eggers owns McSweeney's, the publishing house, and publishes a monthly literary magazine. He's one of the young writers who came of age at the millennium, and his work has a unique style.

I found the book on a shelf of a house I was staying in, and decided to read it mainly to see how it read 8 years after its debut. I've often thought that many books that stand out for their unique style get dated very quickly, but I didn't find that to be true for this one.

The narrative line for the book is Eggers struggle to raise his young brother after their parents both die. Eggers was just finishing college, and his brother was eight at the time, and, even though Eggers wasn't truly ready to take on the responsibility, the brothers' other two siblings were in even less ideal circumstances.

If he'd written this as a standard "I did something remarkable" kind of memoir I'm sure it would have sold a few thousand copies and gone into the returns bin. But this is a long way from a standard memoir.

His style is unique, and that's probably best. Not because it's not entertaining, but because it's so unique that it would be trite and silly to try to replicate it. It's hard to describe, but the book has a stream-of-consciousness feel to it. Actually, it feels like he's talking to you in real time in a few spots. It also seems a bit like a diary, where the diarist is often kicking himself in the ass. At times it has a "let's write a novel!" energy, like a Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney movie where the characters have no business putting on a play in dad's barn but manage to present a polished work.

The paperback version, which I read, has a large addendum of the mistakes made in the book that's printed upside-down at the back of the book. Eggers is also a cartoonish/artist, and he includes all sorts of little drawings and schema.

In many ways it's very amateurish, but that's part of its charm. He's trying to write this book while getting his little brother to school, having water-balloon fights, sliding on their socks through the house, and not cleaning their apartment. The writing is so unselfconscious that it wouldn't surprise me to learn that his young brother had written it. That's not to say it's immature. It's just that childlike.

I definitely recommend the book, but only for those who are amenable to something callow and wide-eyed.

I'm tired of Gooberhead being sick with colds, sinus infections and Croup all the time. I can't tell when one's ending and another's beginning or if they're all the same one! So, I'm going to try to keep a journal each day on his symptoms.

Background

Gooberhead was born in December 2005. In December 2006, I took him to the pediatrician (Dr. T) for a cough that had been lingering for about 2 weeks. For the first time in his short life, he was diagnosed with an ear infection. He either kept the same EI for 3 months or he had 3 individual ones, we don't know. In any case, we dealt with them from 12 - 15 months old.

He first tried Amoxicillin, but had an allergic reaction. We then tried Omnicef...twice...with no success. So, then we tried Suprax, but he ended up vomitting because of it. Our 4th antibiotic to try was Zithromax...aka: Z-pack...the cheapest option of the four! IT WORKED!!! He hasn't had an EI ever since then, although I'm constantly holding my breath when he goes to the doctor for a lingering cold!

At approximately 18 months old, his pediatrican put him on Claritin daily. He took that for about a year or so until he started getting continuous colds again. So, his pediatrician switched him to Zyrtec, which he's been on ever since.

I think we're back to needing something else since he's been keeping a cold/sinus infection for the last 5 months. I brought it up for the first time this season back in December at his 3-year check-up. At that point, he'd had a lingering cough since Thanksgiving Eve. So, Dr. T put him on the first round of antibiotics (Z-pack). He got better, but the cough never completely went away. Then, on February 17, he ended up with what I thought was another bug. Took him to Dr. T only to be diagnosed with Croup. However, there's not much that can be done for it, except to just ride it out. The worst was over in about 3 days, but a slight cough lingered at least 10 days later. It went away for a few days, although the nasal congestion never did. Then, on March 7, he started coughing a bit more. On March 9, I took him AGAIN to Dr. T. Once again, she put Gooberhead on Zithromax (Round #2). As instructed, he took it for 5 days (until March 13). That seemed to clear up the cough for a few days, but not the crusty nose. Then, on March 23, he woke up with yet another cough and runny nose! Twelve days later, he still had a slight cough and runny nose. On April 6, I once again took him to Dr. T for what appeared to be Pink Eye. It was, in fact, confirmed to be Pink Eye. We also discussed his lingering cough and crusty nose. So, he was put on Round #3 of Zithromax, which was finished on April 10. By the end, his nose was barely crusty and his cough was pretty much gone. However, on Easter Sunday (April 12), his nose started running...or, more like POURING. That night, he started coughing horribly...more of a croupy cough. Today, April 13, he's been coughing frequently and his nose has been pouring all day. He had a very difficult time going to sleep due to the coughing.

So, that's where we are now. Hopefully, this cold/Croup/whatever passes quickly so we don't end up needing to visit Dr. T yet again!!! He's already been 4 times since December.

Nice work Today Tonight for editing together - and repeating - a few clips of Karl laughing during the course of a light-hearted post-Logies show that went for three hours. And that proves....what?
I went to the Logies once. Years ago when I was in magazines. I sat next to Tara Moss and someone else very tall (I think maybe the red-headed actress from Hey Dad?) and drank too much because the ceremony was rather long and boring. I cant remember who was hosting. I cant remember what I was drinking but it didnt need to be much. I am a very cheap drunk.
There was dancing involved.

The title of this post sounds so blah! But, I was excited to see I hit the 100 mark! Yay me! (As London would say on the Suite Life of Zach and Cody)
Ok, so I tackled the Shred today earlier than yesterday! Believe me, I had every excuse not to do it at all - woke many times last night with a cramp behind my right shoulder blade, woke with a headache at 2 am which I still had despite many different meds, so sore from day 1, etc But, I did it anyway!
Now, I am happy to be able to say that I did it, its over with, done, finished, behind me Well, you get the point!! But, I am flustered because I saw a 5 pound increase in my weight this morning. 5 pounds!! But, I will not be deterred! Yesterday, I tried some small modifications in my diet. I will just continue with those small changes, moving to bigger changes and adding exercise until I see big changes.
As for day 2 of the workout I was so very sore to start with. Well, you know that becasue I said it already. But, I was pleasantly surprised to find that some of that soreness decreased as I went through the exercises. And, despite weekly hikes with the family and using my exercise bike - I am severly lacking in the cardio. I can muddle through most of the strength parts and while I have no ab definition, I can actually complete all of the ab workout except for the bicycle  - but I have to take a couple breaks during the cardio. And, as I sit here, I continue to have the shakey hands, nausea and can feel the sweat pour down my back as I did on day 1. It is definitely a workout!
For an added bonus, my headache is gone! Oh, the power of exercise!
I plan to make some concrete goals today for this 30 days besides to survive Jillians workout! And, despite me saying I would not do more before photos, I did! Again, I will spare you!
I am encouraged by others success and stories! So, please - whether doing the 30 Day Shred or something else. Please do feel free to share!.

When did "being completely honest" become a synonym for selfishness and getting whatever you want?

It seems to me that men today think that if they tell you how stressed, tired, confused and complicated their lives are then we will feel sorry for them and forgive them for not following the basic rules of decent courtship and by that I simply mean that they will not disappear into thin air.

Perhaps they forget that those symptoms are the founding blocks of a woman's life so right now my sympathy level is pretty limited.

So many pages, blogs, movies and books have been written about this that it almost seems redundant to even mention it, yet here I am doing precisely that - complaining about men. This for me is quite unusual seeing as I have a wonderful relationship with men and consider myself a woman of her times with a well balanced mix of male friends, ex-es and colleagues. Fact is though, that I am finding their need to be so hones quite nauseating and wish that sometimes they would just keep the definition of their hectic lives to themselves, figure out a solution and move on to being the decent guy who 'has it together'.

As I write these lines the cliches that my words are conjuring are spinning through my head. I can just imagine an army of men screaming at me that I am the typical woman who is messing with their brains. "First you want us to get in touch with our feminine side, then you want us to hide it all and be a man!!" Well let's just say that women seem to handle stress and multitasking a little better and still hold it together. When we have a tough few weeks at work and a messy family situation we don't simply pick up our mental luggage and fly off to planet "leave-me-alone-I-need-to-be-by-myself" .

At the end of the day though I must admit that the book and film "He's just not that into you" keep coming back to haunt me. It is as though the answer to any question that sound something like: "why has he stopped texting, calling, facebooking, skyping etc" finds its answer in the title of the abovementioned.

Hm.  Well, Ive been remiss in reporting the social news.  Dr. Filk paid us a flying visit on Friday, and mightily glad was I to see him, and he found la belle Margot entertaining.
Paul and the kids were by for Sunday dinner and we watched Jurassic Park.  Paul brought the best pork roast, and we had onions and carrots and taters and corn, so it was a real Sunday dinner.
No date with my new friend this past weekend, Ive been feeling a bit off colour and my foot is still hurting like a b9st9rd so anything involving more than about ten blocks of walking finishes me off.  Yes, I should see a doctor, but for what?  To get told its sprained ligaments and I should get orthotics?  I am so tired of going to the doctor and finding out Im a jeezly hypochondriac.  Given that Im fifty Im sure Ill get bad news eventually but every health scare Ive had except for my back - which is the same as always, thanks - has turned out to be figmentary.  Actually, I took Robaxicet last night and I had an AWESOME nights sleep.
Just fixed poached eggs and toast for brekkie, and I am now contemplating a second cup of coffee.  Oh Margot, quit chewing on the cable..  If you get electrocuted, nobody will be able to tell.
The landpeers have rearranged the way they park their vehicles so I can use the walkway.  Jeff and I are responding by ensuring they have the rent cheques in hand in about fifteen minutes.  Its actually kinda handy having the landpeers that close.
I handed out biscotti at work yesterday.  Man, I love doing that.
I wish I could blog about work.  But continued employment beckons encouragingly, so I will defer to my more sensible, grownup, beaten down by capitalizm self, and keep my icecream siphon closed.
Speaking of ice cream.  I brought some home last night.  Then I said to Jeff, Screw this noise Dessert, its whats for supper.  Thus my atonement with a nourishing and sensible brekkie today.

ld words: Shopflick - Raquel Allegra

  • Apr. 2nd, 2009 at 3:44 PM

raquelallegra.com
I've been planning this t-shirt exhibition project that I want to start executing pretty soon, and I stumbled across this insanely amazing designer by the name of Raquel Allegra. She's a pretty newly-discovered Los Angeles-based designer who started her line without any real intention of creating a business. She manipulates her garments through numerous rounds of distressing methods such as sanding, shredding, stretching, dyeing, etc. But wait-- we haven't even gotten to the "genius" part yet-- she uses old t-shirts from the county jails!!!! What's more fucked up (in a brilliant way) is that her timeless pieces range from $100-$1000+. Like most, my initial thought was "WHAT THE FUCK," but I've read that some pieces may take up to 10 hours of manual labor to fully execute the beautifully detailed delicate textures found on each unique garment. I just found this so marvelously ironic, completely new and creative in today's fashion aesthetics. The fact that the sweats and dirts of the former owners who unexpectedly happen to be ex-convicts are preserved, then completely transformed to reveal the minimal beauties of this organically fine-textured cotton is just so inspiring, appreciative, and UNBELIEVABLE. I am officially intrigued.

The boy and I have made several trips over to Los Angeles this time around to California, despite the 1hr+ daunting drive that comes along with the package. I don't know if it's the recession or what, but the traffic here doesn't seem that bad anymore. No one's gots the moneys to go out driving I guess -- carpooling it? Maybe that's a good thing -- my pretties you should be doing that anyways for mama earth ;)

A few days ago, we spent the entire day just walking around LA, exploring different random shops that I've heard of, have been meaning to go to, or wanted to go back to, with eating and all that good stuff mixed in between.

Had lunch upon arrival at Joan's on 3rd after hearing it was a good spot for sidewalk lounging. What can I say -- I am a lounging kinda gal.

Off to the clinic for an early appointment, (Jeff gave me a lift) and then I went completely berserk.  Wandered into a cooking supply place, got a bunch of kitchen gadgets I actually needed, and a bunch I dont but had to have.  Bought a new handbag (basically a black shopping bag with zippers, just barely big enough to hold my laptop).  Bought two stems of white freesia.  Walked from Cambie and Broadway to Kingsway and Broadway.  On the way poked my head into the Luddites place of work and got off the perfect line the Luddites boss said, For me? when he saw the flowers and I just grinned and said, No, for him!  which amused the Luddite no end. Hes much the same as always, except more so.  Of course he wouldnt take the flowers from me so I got to be a smart ass to his boss AND keep the flowers.  Then I wandered into a mattress store and after telling the guy to wake me in an hour after finding the perfect mattress, purchased two single mattresses with covers, to be delivered next Saturday. Thats so Keith has a proper bed when he sleeps over.  Also, as much as I like the Fjord Queen bed its too damned big for my little bedroom, so Im going to go back to sleeping on the floor.  I have a week to reorganize things so when the mattresses show up I have places to put them.  With that done I walked to the next bus stop and went home, many hundreds of dollars poorer.   But I can julienne things, and I have proper garlic technology, and I found out where to buy a cast iron grill for the oven, and I got two cute little egg poachers and promptly used them to make our lunch (Jeff declared himself contented), and I can now properly clean tea and coffeepots, and I got to listen to the chef in the back (there are cooking classes at the back of the store) shriek and giggle in a most entertaining way. I also got to listen to an openly gay man tell the gal at the counter that the store was worse than crack, and I was in no position to debate the point.
Now:
I assault the bathroom and remove scum and squick;
I do some on line banking to backstop my purchases;
I run some laundry;
I do some mending;
I fix my little green hat so it sits on my head properly;
I review the list of things to do that I made while waiting for the very sweet woman who saw me at a clinic (never get two perimenopausal women in the same room discussing the joys thereof, its wonderful for us but murder on the appointment schedule).
It has to be spring.  I got my mo back.

So around six a.m. I commenced to making waffles, and around seven we moseyed on down to the Stuporstore. Our departure was delayed by an accumulation on the car of glutinous snow.  The snow adhered to a depth of two inches (5 cm) all over the roof surface and covered the bottom half of the front windscreen. Trying to sweep it off was like trying to move concrete. Pounding it with your fist was pointless - this was a job for tools.  I went back into the house and procured one sturdy kitchen spoon and two plastic spatulas to chip the dense and crispy ice off the windscreen.  Bash, Bash.  Very satisfying.  I took some of the rime off with a credit card.  The car had been warming up for a number of minutes while Jeff adjusted the level of the snow so he could actually get out of the parking space.  After enough shoveling for Jeff to have gotten quite warm, we were ready to go.  Jeff rolled down his window about halfway, and about two seconds after he started heaving the car out of that abbreviated snowbank, his side of the car filled with footlong chunks of dense and abrasive snow, which had all merrily slid off the now-warm roof - and then continued to slide in, although not in quite so much quantity. It was like being on a movie set; the sun shone through the ice while it was happening. I began to suspect Jeff of setting it up for my entertainment, but on the other hand I didnt think it wise to laugh.  After a brief and agonizing pause (all streets are one way now, since they are only one lane, so youre constantly butting heads with people trying to go the other way, and Jesus God!  Mary, St. Patrick and St. Jude! what IS IT with Vancouver drivers and their signally failing to signal habit?  Must I even call them drivers, before the bones of all the saints?) Jeff had hucked as much of the snow overboard as possible and again we were on our way.
Earlier that day, in a rare show of weakness, I admitted to my brother that I had been running away with his plastic containers and eating them.  He owned that this was indeed a possible explanation for their continuing disappearances.  I, blushing furiously, stated that I thought eating them would somehow be less shameful than losing them, which was, indeed, what I had been doing with them.  He had had his suspicions. The leftovers departed the house, and neither they nor their containers ever returned. The worlds oldest, and saddest, story, dont you think?
Eddie sleeps on my bed a good portion of every day.
Somewhere in there we watched Keira Knightley in Domino.  Its an interesting movie that bites off much more than it can chew, but gets by on lightly done comic book charm.  It is a movie, in my opinion, of forgivable faults. When did Christopher Walken get the I must appear in every Hollywood movie in a substantial bit part? contract?  Damn!
I know I am a traitor to my kindred, but I prefer Keira Knightley as Lizzie Bennett to any others I have seen. As Domino shes all haircut and bravado, not her best role.
I have an appointment with some pork chops.  I intend to ingest broccoli, with a smidge of dressing.  I see a salad, embellished with those new grape tomatoes that taste so good.  But all these things will not be unless I arise and make them to happen, and I should chop almonds for biscotti.  That is if anybody wants some.

My husband likes strong coffee and this fits the bill. Jet fuel is a good name for it. You get 50 cups for the price which is great. I was buying this from other companys and paying close to this with shipping for one box.
